weezer's song 'my name is jonas' makes me sad. i miss jonas fladung :'(
i'll see you again sometime, Brother. Gott segnen.

My name is Jonas.
I'm carrying the whale.
Thanks for all you've shown us.
This is how we feel.
Come sit next to me.
Pour yourself some tea.
Just like Grandma made
When we couldn't find sleep.
Things were better then.
Once but never again.
We've all left the den.
Let me tell you 'bout it.
---
Come up to meet ya, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you, tell you I need ya
And tell you I set you apart
Tell me your secrets, and nurse me your questions
Oh let's go back to the start
Running in circles, coming in tails
Heads on a science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh take me back to the start

I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart.
Questions of science, science and progress
Don't speak as loud as my heart.
Tell me you love me, and come back and haunt me,
Oh, when I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing tails
coming back as we are.

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy.
No one ever said it would be so hard
I'm going back to the start.

Ooooohhhhhhh [x4]

"If you really want to do something, you'll find a way; if you don't, you'll find an excuse." -i like that. it's true.

i'm not really feeling anything lately, just kinda numb to the world. i haven't been doing too much either. actually working kinda sucks, but it's good. at least i get to go with raerae every day for a fun and early ride; and work with her and brie. the ppl there are pretty cool.

*oh, sorry droste. they made me. you'll know what i'm talking about later.*

and scooters are fun too...at 70mph. i don't know how i got it that fast, no one else could. and getting lost and almost hitting a mailbox---sweet. i mean, no i didn't...

and the title doesn't make sense, except that i'd rather be in texas

low class
06.24.05 (9:01 pm)   [edit]
read this and thought of my dad...kinda sad isn't it?

A Quick Observation of the Low Class
By Terry Mitchell

We can all learn a valuable lesson about the types of behavior and attitudes to avoid like the plague, simply by observing the characteristics of people we all know are low class. Being low class is not a function of the lack of money or social status. I've seen rich people and those high on the social ladder who were very low class. I've also observed folks who were living below the poverty level and low on the social scale who were very high class people. It also has nothing to do with race or ethnic background. Instead, being low class is strictly a matter of behavior and attitudes.

Most of us exhibit some low class characteristics once in a while. We are all human and that's normal. However, those who exhibit more than half of these characteristics most of the time need to seriously re-examine their lives. They are in danger of becoming low class, if they aren't already.

We all know that low class people rarely achieve real success in life. Most successful people, on the other hand, possess qualities that are the complete opposite. Here are some characteristics of the low class to try on for size:

They have no desire to improve themselves, but they wouldn't mind having someone else come along and give them a boost.

They always stand ready to guard their rights, although they don't mind trampling on someone else's.

They blame others for their lack of success.

Nothing motivates them more than the prospect of easy money.

They have no problem with ill-gotten gain.

They've never heard a conspiracy theory they didn't believe.

They can't express themselves verbally without the use of profanity.

The more that's given to them, the more they complain about not having been given more.

They are waiting for their ship to come in.

Use of proper grammar is never a priority for them.

They spend more than five percent of their income on lottery tickets.

They've developed a sense of entitlement. They feel that the world owes them something. Therefore, they feel no need for gratitude.

They've made a habit of never paying their bills on time and are constantly dodging their creditors.

They won't do any more work than they absolutely have to. They see no dishonor in being a slacker. In fact, they take pride in their indolence.

They think they should be able to do whatever makes them feel good and whatever satisfies their urges, without any natural consequences.

They wink at immoral behavior.

The concepts of restraint, self discipline, and delayed gratification are foreign to them.

They've become experts at making excuses for themselves.

They live to have what they want and have it immediately.

They refuse to take personal responsibility for their own actions.

They constantly suspect others of ulterior motives.

They are always looking to cut corners and take short cuts.

They can't accept losses or setbacks gracefully.

They find The Jerry Springer Show more interesting than a presidential debate.

People can easily discern that they have an attitude just by observing the expression on their face.

Engineer's Tiny Chip Changed the World
06.22.05 (8:26 am)   [edit]
Jack St. Clair Kilby, 81, died of cancer Monday at his home in Dallas, almost 50 years after his idea for what is commonly known as the microchip revolutionized the way that the world computes, calculates and communicates, ushering in the Information Age.

Kilby won the 2000 Nobel Prize in physics for his 1958 invention of the integrated electronic circuit, which made personal computers, satellite navigation systems, cell phones and the $200 billion field of microelectronics possible. He invented the hand-held calculator, which commercialized the microchip, and held more than 60 other patents.

"In my opinion, there are only a handful of people whose works have truly transformed the world and the way we live in it -- Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, the Wright brothers and Jack Kilby," Tom Engibous, chairman of Texas Instruments, where Kilby worked for years, said in a statement. "If there was ever a seminal invention that transformed not only our industry but our world, it was Jack's invention of the first integrated circuit."

Kilby, who failed the college entrance exam for MIT, had not worked at Texas Instruments long enough to merit vacation during the company's annual summer shutdown. So he was alone in the labs, working on borrowed equipment on July 24, 1958, when he struck upon the idea that he jotted down in his notebook: "The following circuit elements could be made on a single slice: resistors, capacitor, distributed capacitor, transistor."

Engineers call that the Monolithic Idea. It cracked a nagging engineering problem. The transistor had been invented 10 years earlier, replacing the vacuum tubes used in the earliest computers. But transistors were built of components strung together with wires. A single bad connection would ruin the circuit, and circuits could only get so small before it was impossible for humans to solder them together. Kilby's idea was to eliminate the wires and use a single block of silicon, or germanium, containing an entire electronic circuit.

When he built the first circuit, it was half the size of a paper clip. In the same space, engineers can now squeeze about 100 million transistors.

The chip first went to work in a computer for the Air Force in 1961 and in the Minuteman missile in 1962. A list of what it's used for today is almost endless: CAT scans, vehicle emission controls, sports broadcasting replays, iPods, military night-vision goggles, microwave ovens and pet-locator devices, among others.

Kilby's invention came just six months before Robert Noyce, who later co-founded Intel Corp., came up with the same idea. Noyce, who died in 1990, was usually credited with making the idea practical, while Mr. Kilby was acknowledged as the first to conceive of the idea of putting components on a single piece of material. After a 10-year patent battle, the men called themselves co-inventors of the microchip, and Kilby publicly credited Noyce in his Nobel Prize speech.

A quiet, self-effacing man, the 6-foot-6 Kilby "seemed almost embarrassed by the attention" of the Nobel Prize, said Washington Post writer T.R. Reid, who wrote a book about the invention. "I never imagined how much human ingenuity could do to turn that one idea into useful applications," Kilby told Reid.

The accolades that came with the Nobel reminded Kilby of the story told by a previous Nobel recipient, Charles Townes, of a beaver gnawing on a branch just below the Hoover Dam.

"Somebody came along and looked at the massive structure and said, 'Did you build that thing?' And the beaver answered, 'Well, it's kind of based on an idea of mine,' " Kilby said.

Kilby was born in Jefferson City, Mo., and grew up in Great Bend, Kan. During World War II, he was in the Army and was sent to India, where his job was to repair radios, although there were no spare parts. The resourcefulness that the assignment taught him proved useful later in his life.

After the war, he took the MIT entrance exam but fell three points short of the required grade. He enrolled in the University of Illinois and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering, then received a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1950.

He worked for Globe Union, a Milwaukee firm, for 10 years before taking a job at Texas Instruments in Dallas. He became an independent consultant in 1970 and officially retired during the 1980s, but he continued to drop in at Texas Instruments to inspire younger engineers. He was a professor of electrical engineering at Texas A&M University from 1978 to 1984.

Some controversy attended his Nobel Prize. Kilby was not a physicist, and some research scientists felt that his invention ventured perilously close to mere applied science and away from fundamental science. The Nobel committee decided, however, to honor inventions related to the tech world; Kilby shared the prize with Zhores I. Alferov and Herbert Kroemer, who developed electronic components that turned solid-state lasers into practical devices, such as bar-code scanners.

Kilby preferred the title of engineer to scientist, saying that scientists get ideas but engineers make them work. He invented a wide variety of electronic gadgets. At his wife's suggestion, he created a precursor to the telephone answering machine: a device that screens telephone calls so the phone won't ring unless the call is one you want to take. He spent several years developing a household solar-energy generator.

The awards piled up: He was given the National Medal of Science in 1970 and named to the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1981. In 1989, the National Academy of Engineering gave Kilby and Noyce its top award. In 1995, he received the Robert Noyce Award from the Semiconductor Industry Association. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers gave him its fellow title and its medal of honor. Japan gave him its Kyoto Prize for the betterment of mankind.

His wife of 34 years, Barbara Louise Annegars, died in 1981. His sister, who cared for him, died in December. Survivors include two daughters and five granddaughters.

Although Kilby's work inaugurated the Information Age, he was slow to embrace the latest consumer technologies and worked on outdated computers for years. He didn't own a digital watch or a cell phone as recently as a year ago. He preferred a slide rule but would use his own hand-held calculator because of its greater accuracy.

Kilby was once asked what the worst application of his invention was. His response was immediate: the singing greeting card.

i made cookies tonight for no reason while watching AFI's 100 years, 100 movie quotes. #5 should have won: here's lookin at you kid. but frankly my dear i don't give a damn was #1. good enough. now the dough for the cookies has to chill for an hour...so i'm waiting. i want to watch all those good movies now...
apparently i need to really really get a job before friday, says my dad. oh, well i'll just go to mom's house if he kick's me out. i don't care. next summer i won't be here anyway so i won't have to worry about him. hell, he's moving anyway in a couple of years after he finally retires. he could retire now, but i guess he is waiting til i graduate. i'll just get a job on the opposite coast...
"a person isn't measured by the grades they get on a piece of paper"

happy thoughts:
the beach, a good converstation, a bubble bath, chocolate milkshake, getting mail, a drive on a pretty road, laughing at yourself, a newborn baby, running through sprinklers, giggling, friends, having someone play with your hair, swinging, sweet dreams, road trips, the stars, warm blankets from the dryer, fresh cookies from the oven...
smile! :)

welcome mat
06.19.05 (11:44 pm)   [edit]

Picture This:  Your friend calls up and you go over to see him/her. As you are walking up to the front door you see a welcome mat in front of the door. You've been looking for a door mat for your house and this mat in front of your friend's house is absolutely stunning. You think about just grabbing the mat and leaving. Your friend greets you at the threshold of the door and invites you in. As you are leaving it's late and dark. You go home and remember the next day the door mat was perfect. You wish you could have it, but alas your friend said it was the last one the store had. You call up your friend to see if you can buy it from them, but your friends house burnt last night after you left. He/She was ok, but the house is gone. You missed your chance. In the end you ended up walking over it.

phantom
06.15.05 (1:47 am)   [edit]
i watched phantom movie version tonight with sander, stephanie, and raeann. i think they pretty much did it justice from when i saw it a few years ago. phantom can't sing worth a damn in the movie; the tempo was way to fast in most parts; and they spoke parts instead of singing which was annoying. other than that, it really wasn't too awful darn bad. yet is nothing compared to being live! as are most. all in all, you should watch it if you haven't, and better yet go see it and support live theatre!

the notebook
06.13.05 (7:53 am)   [edit]
Noah: So it's not gonna be easy. It's gonna be really hard. We're gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, for ever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me, please? Just picture your life for me? 30 years from now, 40 years from now? What's it look like? If it's with him, go. Go! I lost you once, I think I can do it again. If I thought that's what you really wanted. But don't you take the easy way out.
Allie: What easy way? There is no easy way, no matter what I do, somebody gets hurt.
Noah: Would you stop thinking about what everyone wants? Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want. What do YOU want? What do you WANT?
Allie: It's not that simple.
Noah: What... do... you... want? Whaddaya want?

-

Noah: Summer romances begin for all kinds of reasons, but when all is said and done, they have one thing in common. They're shooting stars, a spectacular moment of light in the heavens, fleeting glimpse of eternity, and in a flash they're gone.

-

Anne: 'Cause I might know you a little better than you think. And I don't want you waking up one morning thinking if you'd known everything you might have done something different.

-

Noah: My Dearest Allie. I couldn't sleep last night because I know that it's over between us. I'm not bitter any more, because I know that what we had was real. And if in some distant place in the future we see each other in our new lives, I'll smile at you with joy and remember how we spent the summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love. The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds, and that's what you've given me. That's what I hope to give to you forever. I love you. I'll be seeing you. Noah

-

Noah: Yes... it wasn't over, it still isn't over.

-

Allie: They fell in love, didn't they?
Duke: Yes, they did.

-

Allie: Do you think our love can make miracles?
Duke: I do.

Last night was totally AWESOME!!! Everyone should go see Rocky at Hollywood Bar and Filmworks!!! Remember to dress up in costume and don't tell that you are a rocky virgin. http://filmworksonline.com/rh...
Pictures may be floating around...
Be sure to walk around Indy as a sweet transvestite from transsexual transylvania because it is absolutely hilarious, and guys yell cat calls...and most people have no idea what to do when they see you.

yet more songs to describe my feelings
06.07.05 (11:21 pm)   [edit]

It starts with
One thing, I don’t know why
It doesn’t even mather how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To explain due time
All I know
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down ’till the end of the day
Clock ticks life away
It’s so unreal
You didn’t look out below,
Watch the time go right out the window
Tryn’ to hold on
Didn’t even know, I wasted it all
Just to watch you go
I kept everything inside
And even though I tried
It all fell apart
What it’s meant to be
Will, eventually be,

A memory of a time,
When I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter...
I had to fall, to loose it all...
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter...

One thing, I don’t know why
It doesn’t even mather how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To remind myself
How I tried so hard...
Dispite the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so far
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
In the end...

You kept everything inside
And even though I tried it all fell apart
What it meant to be, will
Eventually, be a memory of a time
When I tried so hard,
And got so far,
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter
I had to fall, to loose it all
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter

I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far, as I can go
For all this
There’s only one thing you should know

I’ve put my trust, in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There’s only one thing you should know...
I tried so hard,
And got so far,
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter
I had to fall, to loose it all,
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter

***
that's how i feel!!!!!!!!!

the stars
06.07.05 (10:56 am)   [edit]

so i went swimming yesterday with raeann, brie, anna, adam, and c-dawg --and had a great time, but i definately got a bit too much sun. even my scalp is a bit more colorful than it should be. oh, well. that's one small step of pain; one giant leap towards a tan... [i'm a tool] it was still fun, nonethe less. stephanie met up with us after work and we went to brie's for dinner to decide the next activity of the night, which turned out to be a movie in the tahoe: monster-in-law. which was pretty good considering it was jlow and her sweet sweet ass. after coming how to a relatively short evening, ok so it was 11:30, i decided the night sky was too beautiful to let me just go to bed. i lied on my roof as i often do and decided that in the past year indy has gotten a lot brighter and is drownding out the starts. so i say, screw indy! i want to knock out the power grid for one night! :-P it's weird because on my roof time just stops and goes backwards. all of these memories of my childhood come to me and then i start getting philosophical. i can understand the ancient greeks and romans and how they must have felt when they gazed heavenly. nothing between me and god's artwork of the night. i leaves me in awe to just look at the stars hanging there as they have for thousands of years-unchanging. this is the same thing that everyone who has walked the earth sees at night. that's just cool. i thought of how fast my life has gone, yes almost 20 years..., and i wonder where my life will lead me. i thought of a poem that i'm sure we all got back in the day in an email foward about "time is short/the music won't last" i love that poem, despite it being an annoying email foward. let me google it for you:
**********
Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask "How are you?"
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say "Hi"?
You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away.
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.

i love this song
06.05.05 (11:39 pm)   [edit]
im a sucker for a great piano song.

100 years
by five for five

"I'm 15 for a moment
Caught in between 10 and 20
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
I'm 22 for a moment
She feels better than ever
And we're on fire
Making our way back from Mars
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to lose
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
I'm 33 for a moment
Still the man, but you see I'm a they
A kid on the way
A family on my mind
I'm 45 for a moment
The sea is high
And I'm heading into a crisis
Chasing the years of my life
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to lose yourself
Within a morning star
15 I'm all right with you
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
Half time goes by
Suddenly you’re wise
Another blink of an eye
67 is gone
The sun is getting high
We're moving on...
I'm 99 for a moment
Dying for just another moment
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
15 there's still time for you
22 I feel her too
33 you’re on your way
Every day's a new day... oooo oooo ooooo
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to choose
Hey, 15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live."

Let It Out
06.03.05 (12:34 pm)   [edit]

My favorite Let It Out section entries form last year that are strung above my desk:

"Have you ever noticed that the people who complain loudest about immigrants not learning to speak English fast enough are the Americans who were born here, yet still can't speak proper English themselves?"

"There is no such thing as a smart Democrat. The two terms are mutually exclusive."

"Why is violence more accepted than sex by our society? Sex is a lot more fun."

"Give someone a piece of your heart, not a piece of your mind."

"Why do we have to be conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat? I think we'd get along better if we were all trying to be Americans."

"Something you need most might be something you turn away from, something you turn away from might be something you regret, and something you regret, in the end, might cost you the one chance you had."

"Love is like playing a piano. First you must learn to play by the rules, then you must forget the rules and play from your heart."

"Look for the positive qualities in every person you meet, and help them see these characteristics as strenghts that they possess."

"Although we do not choose the ways we aer hurt, it's up to us to choose the ways we will heal."

"The world is like a mirror. If you face it smiling, it'll smile right back."

"We don't change God's word; God's word changes us."

"You don't love a woman because she is beautiful, but she is beautiful because you love her."

"Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand."

"God will straighten it all out when he is ready."

"Can vegetarians eat animal crackers?"

"You're living proof that some nice guys finish first."

"Everbody stumbles now and then. The key to success is to pick yourself up and start over again."

"When the aliens come, they'll eat the fat ones first."

"Has anyone just stopped and looked at the changing leaves lately? They are so pretty!"

"Some people love drama!"

"Trust the past to God's mercy, the present to God's love and the future to God's providence"

"There are only two things you can really depend on: One is the changeableness of life, and the other is the unchanging self within you."

"Ask the Lord to give you strength to get through every day."

"Gggrrrrrrr! Tha's all I get out of Let It Out. Where are the happy people?"

"My heart is alive from the wonderful woman I have met. I underestimated her charm and wit.

"I love my college!"

"If a lie is told often enough and loud enough, it is still just a lie."

"People who start the day on their knees generally go through it on their toes!"

"Your perception isn't necessarialy my reality."

"Those who follow the crowd are quickly lost in it."

"Living ever day like it's your last is an absurd concept. Think of all the deposits that you would have paid to the funeral directors!"

"Physical courage is commonplace; moral courage is rare."

"Organized people are just too lazy to look for things."

"Wisdom does not come witha ge. It comes form learning, and if you don't keep learning something new, they you are a dumb old geezer!"

"Five rules to be happy:
1. Free you heart form hatred.
2. Free your mind from worrries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less."

"The current tax situation where the rich are taxed at a higher rate than the poor is socialism. If we live in the land of the free where all are created equil, then why not a flat-tax system?"

im back, back again...shady's back...tell YOUR friends!
06.02.05 (12:12 pm)   [edit]
i finally left rose on sunday with my travel buddy dave.  there was really no reason in not leaving until then when i could have been home a lot sooner, like wednesday night, except i wasn't ready to start dealing with all of the crap that is facing me now.  i just hung out, told my boss that i could work for setup for graduation, have a nice goodbye with a few of my brothers, and saturday i went up to see Carrie and ended up staying the night. i just had a bit of anxiety and wanted to sit back and think for a while before facing things. even though i wanted to come home for some awesome reasons, i just had to go over in my head what i was doing and that i understood both negative and positive consequences. im not sure if  i do now anyway, but i had some nice convo with people, especially brent, so at least i attempted to figure things out.  actually i did pretty much everything to avoid thinking enough to figure out what the hell i shoud do.  but now that i'm home everything has gone super well.  ive had a lot of fun with new friends, i've gotten to know them better, and i've seen what morning rush hour looks like on the south side ;) i will admit last night was a bit uncomfortable and a little akward, but it didn't go as badly as it could have gone, it was actually quite nice. thanks to brie for being so nice and quite a doll, you know why. i owe her one.  well i actually sat down to put in a blog entry about other shit, but now i don't think i want to.  it would have read In Other News: Shit Has Finally Hit The Fan... but what little pride i do have won't let me say that on here.  let's just say for the two hours that i've been awake thus far today, it is quite possible the worst, and yet i saw this day coming for a long damn while, like five years. do me a favor and pray for me that this will work out. ahhhh, so much is going on in my head that you have no idea. and my head still doesn't work well, lol. how much more and how much longer it can take this shit, i just don't know. but for all i know i will do what i usually do is just supress instead of express and put it away in my head to build up until it's to late.  -oh well, c'est la vie. i guess i'll just go find a job :(
